Turnover cleaning meaningA turnover clean is defined by the clock,
not by how dirty the place is.
“Turnover” means the same word in two industries. For a vacation rental it is a fixed-scope reset between guests, usually measured in hours. For an apartment it is the work between tenants, measured in days. Mixing them up is how a five-hour gap ends up with a deep-clean task list.
The definition
A turnover clean is the cleaning, laundry and restocking done between one guest’s checkout and the next guest’s check-in so the property matches its listing again. Three properties define it:
- A deadline that is not yours. The next check-in time is fixed in a booking.
- A repeatable scope. The same rooms, the same tasks, the same supply targets, every stay.
- A handoff. It ends when someone confirms the unit is ready, not when the cleaner leaves.
Airbnb’s own description of what a cleaning fee covers matches this: the fee “typically pays for the housekeeping you expect to do after hosting guests”, while unexpected costs such as removing smoke odours fall outside it (Airbnb Help Center). Expected, routine, repeatable: that is a turnover.
Turnover, deep clean and apartment move-out compared
| Vacation rental turnover | Deep clean | Apartment turnover (move-out) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trigger | Every checkout | A schedule, or a problem | A tenant leaving |
| Time available | Hours, set by checkout and next check-in | Planned; often a blocked night | Usually days |
| Scope | Fixed list, same each time | Inside appliances, cabinets, skirting, light fittings, windows | Cleaning plus repairs and paint |
| Linens and supplies | Full change and recount every stay | As for a turnover, plus spares | Usually none |
| Ends with | A handoff to the next guest | A turnover | An inspection and a new lease |
The Cleanpad workspace treats a deep clean as an optional block you switch on (inside oven and refrigerator; skirting boards and light fittings; inside cabinets and interior windows), not as extra lines on every turnover. If those tasks appear on a same-day changeover, they either get skipped or push the check-in.
Work out the window you actually have
The window is the time from checkout to the next check-in. Put both dates and times into the setup and the workspace shows it: 10:00 checkout to 15:00 check-in on the same day is a 5-hour window; a 11:00 checkout with a 16:00 check-in is also 5 hours; a gap night turns it into 29 hours.

Five hours is not five hours of cleaning. Subtract travel, the arrival walk-through, any wait for a late checkout and a margin for the final review. What is left is the time the task list has to fit into. If it does not fit, the honest fixes are a second cleaner, a later check-in time or moving the deep-clean tasks to a gap night, not cleaning faster.
What changed in the scope for 2026
Airbnb’s house-rules update, effective 20 November 2026, says guests should not be asked to wash and put away dishes, remove sheets, start laundry or take rubbish off-site. Hosts can still ask for used dishes in the sink, used towels gathered and rubbish sorted into indoor bins, and “lock up at checkout” is one of the seven standard house rules (Airbnb, 20 October 2026). In turnover terms, four jobs some hosts had moved to guests are back on the cleaner’s list and inside the window:
- Strip every used bed (and start the wash straight away).
- Wash, dry and put away dishes.
- Take the rubbish and recycling out to the external bins.
- Collect towels from wherever they were gathered.
If your timing or your cleaning fee assumed guests did these, re-time a few turnovers after the change.
A turnover ends at the handoff
The last part of a turnover is not a cleaning task. It is reading what is still open (a blocked drain, an essential supply short, two unticked tasks) and deciding whether the unit is ready. Cleanpad keeps that decision on its own tab and only lets a host record a confirmation when nothing blocks it. The final inspection guide covers the walk-through; the cleaning order guide covers fitting the work into the window.
